Many people are unfamiliar with the idea of personal branding. Others may try to make it something artificial or contrived. However, branding at its best is something honest and unique.
Branding is not about trying to be someone else. It is about being yourself at your very best. And it is not easy; it takes dedication and effort. Your brand is your reputation: a promise to your customer or constituent that you are trustworthy.
In her book Tough Choices, former HP CEO Carly Fiorina says, “An authentic, powerful brand is a promise and a reminder that a company will be as it says it will be…Those values mean doing the right thing when no one is looking and even when the consequences are difficult.” We can transfer this definition directly to personal branding, if we apply the same amount of responsibility and dedication.
To quote leadership consultant Tom Peters, “We are CEOs of our own companies.”
